What is Behavioural Optometry?
Behavioural Optometry takes a holistic approach to your child’s vision. We understand that vision is a dynamic process of gathering and interpreting information, not just seeing clearly.
While a standard eye test checks for sight clarity (6/6 or 20/20 vision) and eye health, a Behavioural Optometry Assessment goes much deeper. We evaluate all the essential visual skills your child needs to succeed in the classroom and in life.
Think of it this way:
- Sight is the ability to see clearly.
- Vision is the ability to understand and respond to what is seen.
A child can have perfect sight but still struggle with functional vision skills. Our goal is to identify and manage these issues to help your child learn more effectively and confidently.
What’s Involved in the Assessment?
Our comprehensive assessment is a deep dive into your child’s visual system. It takes around 60-90 minutes and is designed to be engaging and stress-free. We will thoroughly test:
- Eye Teaming: How well the eyes work together as a synchronised team.
- Eye Focusing: The ability to quickly and accurately adjust focus from near (a book) to far (the board) and back again.
- Eye Tracking: The skill of smoothly following a line of text or a moving object without jumping or losing place.
- Depth Perception: Accurately judging distances and seeing in 3D, crucial for coordination and sports.
- Visual Processing: How the brain interprets and makes sense of visual information. This includes skills like visual memory and figure-ground perception (finding a specific image in a busy background).
Following the assessment, we will provide you with a detailed report in plain language and discuss our findings and personalised recommendations with you.
Personalised Solutions & Vision Therapy
If we identify a weakness in any of these visual skills, the great news is that vision can be retrained!
We may recommend:
- Specialised Glasses: Lenses prescribed not just for clarity, but to support focusing and eye teaming, reducing visual stress.
- Vision Therapy: A personalised program of in-office and at-home eye exercises designed to strengthen the connection between the eyes and the brain, improving underdeveloped visual skills.
Don’t let an undiagnosed vision problem limit your child’s success. Give them the tools they need to see, learn, and thrive.
